LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE


The Legislative Committee tracks legislative and legal issues that
impact the practice of archaeology, archaeological resources, and
other historic properties. Our activities include informing the
membership about state and federal legislation that touches on
NMAC's goals and encouraging members to comment on such
legislation, informing legislators about NMAC's position and providing
substantive comments on legislation that impacts NMAC's goals, and
participating in the administrative process for development projects
that impacts archaeological and historic properties in New Mexico.


Activity in 2009:

Submitted substantive comments to the bill sponsor for New Mexico
House Bill 520 (Consolidated Environmental Review Act)

Presented NMAC's position on HB 520 to the New Mexico House
Energy & Natural Resources Committee
Consulting Party under the National Historic Preservation Act for the

CR 7950 Road Improvement Project (Road into Chaco Canyon)

Past Activity:

NMAC was a plaintiff in SAGE Council v. Chavez (lawsuit challenging
the extension of Paseo del Norte through Petroglyph National
Monument)
