The modern-day village was established in 1694. Its visitor services include an RV park and the Camel Rock Casino. Originally established around AD 1300, the village is now a National Historic Landmark. Its beautiful setting, including lakes, waterfalls, and mountain terrain, is a major tourist draw. San Ildefonso is famed for its pottery. Two of its members, Julian and Maria Martinez, developed a distinctive polished black-on-black pottery form in the 1920s which continues to be popular today with artists and collectors. Visitors are very welcome, but the village is closed to outsiders at various times throughout the year for religious observances, so check beforehand. There are numerous shops in the Pueblo which sell high quality Native art and crafts.
